Rough Guide

I recently started the BA Textile Design Course at Chelsea College of Art.

Our first brief entitled 'Rough Guide', introduced us to London. Each of us were assigned to an area and encouraged to focus on one theme within that area.

The 'Rough Guide' Brief

I was assigned Brixton, and I created a dictionary of marks found in and around the area. These marks were photographed and translated into simplified drawings, recorded in different ways using a variety of materials. The liveliness of the market and the diversity of culture was captured and injected into my drawings using a bright and vivid colour scheme.

Once our sketchbooks were filled, we selected one page which we photocopied in black and white 100 times, with each one individually worked into, to add colour. (Kam and I stayed up till 5am to get them finished!!) We then compiled our own rough guide which contained one page from every member of our class.

Inside the Rough Guide

Each page was individual and captured its area in an original light. The finished outcome was exciting yet informative, making the brief a great introduction to the course and a lovely way to get to know everyone and the city we work in.
